Breaking Bad has always been a cult classic television series, and more importantly, it has always been an incredible source of memes. The Breaking Bad Universe has many iconic and meme-worthy characters and scenes that have plagued the internet for years since its inception. One of these iconic memes is the "call anonymously" meme, which became an exploitable template in video caption memes, often paired with someone calling an unknown number.

But what is the origin of this viral meme template? And how did it become such an iconic meme? Here's everything you need to know.

What Is The Origin Of The "Call Anonymously" Meme?

On September 25th, 2011, episode 11 of Breaking Bad aired on live TV. The episode, entitled "Crawl Space," involved Walter White asking his Lawyer Saul Goodman to make an anonymous call to the DEA, with Goodman refusing (shown below).

One of the very first iterations of a meme using the clip was a video caption meme. The meme would then be reposted on Instagram. gaining over 80,000 views combined (another repost is shown below).

How Did It Spread Online?

The meme did not see any further use until June 19th, 2022, when a Twitter gimmick account @BreakingBadIrny reposted that same meme, garnering over 160,000 views in just two months. With the spread of the first initial meme, more and more derivates started to spread online, each following the same general template.

On June 20th, TikTok user sean.yy2001 posted the meme with a fake Google search result for a 'big tiddy goth girl', which gained over 400,000 views (shown below).

How Was The Template Used In Memes?

Over time, more versions of the meme spread, each with its twist on the original format. On July 11th, 2022, iFunny user MongoloidWrangler reposed an Among Us version of the meme, another version included a femboy hotline, which received viral spread online (shown below). When called, the number would play "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley upon dialing, Rickrolling the caller.
